Bookkeeping

Free double-entry accounting for small businesses: invoices, receipts, payments, bank accounts, customers, suppliers, profit and loss and balance sheet. Your books stay in your browser.

How to keep your books

  1. Create a business with its name and currency, or open the sample business to explore with realistic numbers first. Add your bank and cash accounts with their opening balances.
  2. Add customers, then create sales invoices. Each invoice gets the next number and a due date from your payment terms; print it or save it as a PDF to send.
  3. When money arrives, record a receipt and tick the invoices it pays. Record spending as a payment, choosing an expense account such as Rent or Software, or pay a supplier's purchase invoice.
  4. Open Reports for profit and loss, the balance sheet, trial balance, general ledger, aged receivables and payables and a tax summary. Download a backup from Settings regularly.

Free double-entry bookkeeping that stays on your computer

Bookkeeping is a free, simple accounting app for freelancers and small businesses. Send invoices, record what you receive and spend, track what customers owe and what you owe suppliers, and see your profit and loss and balance sheet at any date. There is no sign-up and no subscription, and your books are never uploaded: they are saved in your browser on your own device.

Behind the simple screens is real double-entry accounting. Every invoice, receipt, payment, transfer and journal entry posts balanced debits and credits to a chart of accounts, so the trial balance always agrees and the balance sheet always balances. Keep several businesses side by side, print invoices or save them as PDF, export any report to CSV, and download a backup file to move your books to another computer.

Frequently asked questions

Where is my accounting data stored?

In your web browser on this device (IndexedDB). Nothing is sent to a server, so we can't see your books, and they don't sync between devices. Download a backup from Settings and restore it in another browser to move them.

Can I lose my data?

Yes, if your browser's site data is cleared, the browser is uninstalled or the device is lost. The app asks the browser to keep its storage permanently and reminds you when a backup is more than a week old. Keep a recent backup file somewhere safe, such as cloud storage.

Is this real double-entry accounting?

Yes. Every document posts equal debits and credits to accounts, customer and supplier balances live in accounts receivable and payable, and reports are worked out from the ledger, so the trial balance and balance sheet always balance. You don't need to know debits and credits to use it, because invoices, receipts and payments post themselves.

How do I handle VAT, GST or sales tax?

Create a tax code for each rate under Settings and choose it on invoice lines (prices are before tax) or on receipt and payment lines (amounts include tax). Tax goes to the Tax payable account, and the Tax summary report shows tax collected on sales against tax paid on purchases for any period. It is a simple rate-based tool, not a filing-ready tax return, so check with your accountant.

How is this different from Manager, Wave or QuickBooks?

It covers the everyday core of those apps (invoicing, bank, customers, suppliers and the main reports) in a lightweight page that opens instantly and needs no account. It leaves out payroll, inventory, fixed assets, multiple currencies and multi-user access, so a growing business that needs those should move to a full accounting package.

Can more than one person use the same books?

Not at the same time. The books live in one browser. You can hand someone a backup file to restore on their computer, but changes made in two places won't merge.
